Annual Meeting & Election Results

The AACTMAD Annual Meeting & Election was held on May 4, 2008, beginning at 6:30pm. The uncontested slate of director and nominating committee nominees was unanimously elected and the proposed bylaws amendment to change the name of the organization was unanimously passed by the twenty-one (21) members present. The new board of directors is listed here. Those in attendance gave a hearty thank you and round of applause to outgoing directors: Edith Burneye, Julia Hillegonds, Kay Brown, and Neil Epstein for their years of service. The Annual Reports and Financial Statements were distributed and questions and discussion followed.

Election:

The Nominating Committee is pleased to present this year's slate of candidates to serve 2-year terms on the AACTMAD Board of Directors and one nominee to serve a 3-year term on the Nominating Committee. As you'll read, they represent a wide variety of talents, skills and energy. We provided opportunities for self-nominations and received none. Therefore, this slate is uncontested. These nominees will be formally elected by the membership present at the annual meeting on Sunday, May 4th, 2008. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend. Ballots will be available.

Board of Directors (2 year terms, 2008-2010):

Bronwen Gates. I love the magic of the dance and am eager to help support the vision and ongoing growth and development of AACTMAD as a Board Member. I am grateful to find myself in a community of people that have created and continue to support such a wonderful organization. I look forward to the challenge of understanding the complexities of the different components of the organization and helping to create a context that supports the ongoing effectiveness and success of AACTMAD. I am a good organizer and have served for the past two years on the Dawn Dance Committee.

Pat Micks I am a research assistant with the University of Michigan, School of Natural Resources and Environment where I apply my background in forest biogeochemistry and analytical chemistry to long-term studies of carbon cycling in forest ecostystems.
I'm an avid dancer and I am devoted to traditional music of many styles. I've been dancing more than half my life, starting with international folkdance in Texas. I dived into contra dance 12 years ago in New England, and, more recently here in Ann Arbor, English Country and Scandinavian dance. I started dancing in Ann Arbor the week I moved here four years ago and I feel very much a part of the wonderful dance community here. I appreciate so much the incredible energy and dedication of all the dancers and organizers and I will be happy to serve as a member of the AACTMAD board 'team'.
I served on the board of the Woods Hole (MA) Folk Music Society in 2003-4, but my term was only a few months long because of my move to Michigan. My main contribution to WHFMS was as a concert volunteer from 1996-2004. I have just completed three years as a volunteer for Michigan Friends Center in Chelsea. As a member of their Program Committee I planned, publicized, and coordinated a number of public presentations including music concerts, lectures, and workshops. I currently serve on the AACTMAD First Saturday Dance and the Fifth Friday Fusion Dance committees.

Nawal Motawi I've been dancing for 20 years now and have been running a successful business for 16 years. I plan to use those strengths that have helped me sustain my business, to make AACTMAD's dream of owning dance space a reality during this term on the board. Being on the board has been a learning experience and not always easy, however, I am committed to the dance hall project. As a board member, my other priority will be to improve the bookkeeping system.

Gilli Quarterman I was born and raised in Belgium and moved to the US as a teenager. My friend, Shirley Harden, introduced me to ECD over 2 years ago and I have been dancing most every Tuesday since. I live in Northville with my husband Bill- We have 2 sons and an 8-year old granddaughter. I have been involved with many volunteer organizations in my life- I worked at Ford Motor Company corporate offices and later designed training programs for a variety of clients. In addition to dancing, I am an avid knitter. My intention is to keep dancing, walking, traveling and volunteering as long as I can. I'm excited to be involved with AACTMAD.

Ruth Scodel I have been dancing English and sometimes contra for 23 years (I was one of the very small group of regulars on Tuesday night when Don Theyken and Erna-Lynn Bogue began it) and Scottish slightly longer. Before that I did Israeli folkdancing. I'm chair of the AACTMAD library committee and a member of the nominating committee.
In my other life I am D. R. Shackleton Bailey Collegiate Professor of Greek and Latin and chair of the Department of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan. I was Director of the Honors Program for six years and I'm also the immediate past president of the American Philological Association (the organization for scholars of the ancient world, about 3000 members). I've been to many, many meetings, and I'm pretty good at them.

Nominating Committee (3-year term, 2008-2011):

Debbie Jackson I grew up in Owosso, Michigan and spent my early years in choral music work. I now have my own consulting business and work primarily with non-profit organizations. I have served on the nominating committee before and want to be involved on a year-round basis looking for future potential board members and engaging more members with committee work. I love AACTMAD and the interesting people it reaches on an annual basis. For an all-volunteer organization, the service and outreach outcomes are really impressive and I'm proud to be part of and support the organization.
